The Tea Rose Stakes is an exciting Sprint race that comes around in September at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse in New South Wales. The event is part of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and is exclusively designed for three year old fillies. The Tea Rose Stakes is a classic race with a spectacular and cherished history of producing remarkable racing talents. The last year’s edition of the race was one to remember especially for horse racing enthusiasts who first handedly witnessed the competitive nature showcased on the Turf. Guelph exceptionally outmuscled a number of great sprinters to win the race ahead of worthy challengers Arabian Gold and Bound For Earth who both came second and third respectively.
The Tea Rose Stakes is now worth up to $175,000 and the race’s distance was shortened from 1500M to 1400M for the 2013-14 season in a bid to favor high quality sprinters from across the country. The race is held on one of Randwick’s biggest race days along with the Group 1 George Main Stakes. The Tea Rose Stakes is viewed by numerous horse trainers and jockeys as the best build up for the premier 3 year old fillies’ event in the Spring Carnival – The Group 1 Flight Stakes. The race also presents a great opportunity for fillies looking to build on their success in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap and the Group 2 Furious Stakes.
Over the last two decades, a number of fillies have managed to claim a Tea Rose Stakes and Furious Stakes double. Recent winners include More Strawberries in 2010, Prisoner of Love in 2004, Mnemosyne in 2005, and Streama back in 2011. Three year old fillies that perform well in the Tea Rose Stakes tend to register impressive performances in the Spring Carnival especially in the Flight Stakes and as such, the race is one of the most important ones for a lot of trainers.
Recent Tea Rose Stakes and Flight Stakes double winners include Streama back in 2011, Cheeky Choice in 2006, Miss Samantha in 2008 and Ha Ha in 2001. However, Miss Samantha in 2008 added on the double success with a Furious Stakes title to complete a breathtaking treble. Streama in 2011 and Unworldly in 2000 also are some of the few fillies to put their name on the treble. The 2014 Tea Rose Stakes is expected to assemble equally gifted horses and should make a great platform for horse racing enthusiasts looking for an exciting and high quality race.
