The Summoned Stakes is an exclusive mares-only Group 3 race that is held every year as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The race is staged at the Sundown Racecourse although this time round it will take center stage at the Caulfield racecourse due to repairs going on at there. The event is run over 1500M and is one of the final mares only sprint races of the Melbourne Spring.
The race will be held just two days after the biggest race in the Carnival – The Melbourne Cup and will share the same date with the Sundown Classic. The Summoned Stakes is today worth up to $120,000 in prize money and the 2013 edition of race was gladly won by the outstanding Floria with Hi Belle and Wistful both coming through to finish second and third respectively. The event is actually held on the last Group race day at the Melbourne Spring and always attracts high quality mares keen on finishing the spring season on the right momentum.
The Summoned Stakes is mostly contested by mares who took part in the Thousand Guineas or actually the Group 3 Lady Vase Stakes. The last mare to take home the Summoned Stakes and the Lady Vase Stakes in the same year was the remarkable Hi Belle back in 2011. In recent years, the Summoned Stakes has largely been won by a quality sprinter and we rarely see a surprise winner. The race is seen by many trainers as a good way of closing the spring season especially because it is always competitive and full of talented competitors.
Other notable mares to win this race in recent years include the amazing Cabernet who was on hand to taste victory in 2012 and Hinemoa who did well to win the race in 2011. The Summoned Stakes may not be as prestigious as other major sprint races but in its own right the race is always up to standard as far as quality and exciting horse racing is concerned.
