The Royal Sovereign Stakes is a highly competitive 1200M Group 2 race that is held every year in the month of April. The Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales is the current venue playing host to the race. The Royal Sovereign Stakes is held on day 2 of The Championship races schedule and has the privilege of sharing the stage with the ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a Group 1 event worth $4 million. Since the inaugural race held in 1979, the event has enjoyed significant success and often attracts a strong field of highly accomplished horses from around the country. The Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes for fillies which is held in February at the same venue is seen by horse owners and trainers as the ideal lead up race for the Royal Sovereign Stakes.

Participation in the Royal Sovereign Stakes is exclusive to 3 year old geldings and colts that meet the set weight conditions predetermined before the commencement of this showpiece. In 2014, the race is expected to elicit huge interest from quality 3yo especially due to the increase in prize money which has been adjusted upwards from the $175,000 on offer in 2013 to a whopping $500,000. The competitive nature of the Royal Sovereign Stakes has remained one of its trademark identities in recent years. Racing enthusiasts can enjoy a really good show as strong and gifted horses work to outdo each other and bag one of the major titles in Australian Horse racing.

For a race that has gained the reputation of being a tough fight between top class sprinters, Rebel Dane showed excellent form by winning the 2013 edition with relative ease. Urquidez came in second while Taxmeifyoucan was third. Highly accomplished horses have also won the Royal Sovereign Stakes on several occasions. Lonhro and Danewin are some examples of great winners. In addition to this, Hot Snitzel, Master Harry and Shoot out won the 2012, 2011 and 2010 editions of the race respectively.
