Moonee Valley Racecourse
If you love horse racing and would like to experience real life racing then you should make a point of going to the Moonee Valley Racecourse. It is quite easy to access the Racecourse if you live in Melbourne city. You can either use the Moonee Pounds railway station that is about 10 minutes away from the racecourse or you can use the route 59 tram of the Elizabeth street.
History of Moonee Valley Racecourse
Moonee Valley racecourse is one of the major racecourses in Australia. This prestigious racecourse is proudly owned by the Moonee Valley Racecourse club that is situated in Melbourne. The racecourse was started back in 1883 by one Samuel Cox. Prior to the establishment of the racecourse, Samuel Cox purchased a farm owned by John Feehan. The farm was located in Moonee Pounds, the current location of the Mooney valley racecourse.
The Moonee Valley Racecourse horse racing-track is rectangular shaped and it extends to about 1805 meters in circumference. It has one of the shortest finishing which is about 173 meters.
Type of races
There are different types of races that are held in the Moonee valley racecourse they include but not limited to; Manikato stakes, sunline stakes, Alister Clark stakes etc. The most notable races however are the Cox plates.
The Cox plates are held during the month of October and belong to the group 1 races. The race is held every year as an honor to the founder of the Moonee Valley racecourse club; W.S Cox. The Cox plates are considered to be the weight for age races. The weight for age races involves horses carrying a set of weight. The weight to be carried varies depending on the; distance, the sex and the age of the horse. The weight is usually determined using the weight for age scale.
