The Princess Stakes is a breathtaking Group 3 race that comes around during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The event is exclusive to two-year old fillies and is run over a sprint distance of 1200M under predetermined weight and penalty conditions. The Princess Stakes takes place at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse in New South Wales and gifted fillies battle out for the $500,000 on offer in prize money.
The 2013 edition of the Princess Stakes was one of the hotly contested races in the Sydney Autumn but in the end, outstanding filly Everage showed great strength to finish first ahead of Little Miss Smiley and Major Conquest in second and third respectively. The Princess Stakes was upgraded from a listed race to a Group 3 event for the 2013-14 season.
Previously known as the Keith Mackay Stakes, the race has in its proud history produced excellent and quality racing and a number of high quality and gifted fillies have emerged from the event. The Princess Stakes is held on Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival’s biggest championship day and features on the same day as the richest race in the carnival – The Queen Elizabeth Stakes. A lot of horse trainers and owners look at the event as the major sprint race for two year old fillies.
The best lead up race for the Group 3 event is the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes which comes some weeks earlier. In addition to this, fillies that perform well in the Golden Slipper Stakes can also consider running in the Princess Stakes. The increased prize money up to $500,000 will make the Princess Stakes one of the most Expensive Group 3 events and this will help to attract elite and quality fillies to the race. Some of the notable horses to win the Princess Stakes in recent years include Streama in 2011 and Single Style back in 2012.
