The Nivison is a breathtaking Group 3 race exclusive to mares only. The event comes around in October during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and is held at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse in New South Wales. The event is regarded as one of the ideal Group 3 mares-only race and is run over a sprint distance of 1200M.
In the last few decades, The Nivison has provided a great stage for emerging sprinters to launch their racing careers on a strong foundation. The race is today worth up to $125,000 in prize money and is run under set weights and penalty conditions. Outstanding mare Diamond Earth was the proud winner of The Nivison last year and the horse did well to shake off a strong challenge from Plucky Belle who came through in second.
Hidden Kisses was on hand to complete the top three in what has a highly competitive battle. Due to the consistent rise in the quality of racing, The Nivison was upgraded to a Group 3 Race from a listed event for the 2013-14 season. The most ideal lead-up races for the Nivison include the Group 3 races the Sheraco Stakes and the Research Stakes. Although no mares in recent years have managed to win The Nivison and a Sheraco Stakes or Research Stakes double, the event has still produced great champions.
Notably, second placed mare in the 2013 edition Plucky Belle produced an excellent performance in Flemington to win the Group 3 Maybe Mahal Stakes during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The Nivison might not be the big money races in the Sydney Spring Carnival but if history is to be repeated, there is no doubt the race will definitely showcase exciting and enthralling racing in this year’s carnival. Other notable mares to win the Race include Belmont back in 2011 and Quidnunc back in 2012.
