The Newcastle Cameron Handicap is a highly rated open handicap event that is held annually in September at Newcastle’s Broadmeadow Racecourse in New South Wales. The event is part of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and is run over a distance of 1500M which attracts middle distance racers or sprinters looking to try their capabilities in middle distance races.

The Newcastle Cameron Handicap is always an exciting prospect especially for horse racing lovers looking for a great show of country horse racing talent. Although the event has not managed to attract classy and elite horses in recent years, the Newcastle Cameron Handicap has consistently produced great champions some of whom have also made it big in other events in the Australian Turf.

The Newcastle Cameron Handicap is today worth up to $150,000 in prize money and in the 2013’s edition of the race, Toydini exemplary put up a great performance to outclass a field of other talented horses including second placed High Esteem. Scream Machine had to settle for third. The Newcastle Cameron Handicap is part of the two day Newcastle Racing Carnival. The city stands tall on the North of Sydney and is also home to the Group 3 Spring Stakes and Newcastle Gold cup all of which are major races in Australia.

The race was run over 1300M up to the 2009-10 season when the distance was increased to 1400M for the next 2010-11 season. The distance was then upped to 1500M for the 2011-12 season and until today, the Newcastle Cameron Handicap has remained a relatively longer sprint race. The race all the same always presents a great stage for great and talented above average horses from the region.

A number of horses have graced this event with some notable names including Raspberries in 2011, Toydini in 2013 and McClintock in 2009. The Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap is a perfect progression for horses that perform well in the Newcastle Cameron Handicap. Warrior was the last horse to win a Newcastle Cameron Handicap and Bill Ritchie double back in 2004.
