The NE Manion Cup is one of the major quality Handicap races in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The Group 3 event is worth $150,000 in prize money and talented horses compete for honors over a relatively longer distance of 2400M. The NE Manion Cup takes center stage in March every year at the Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. Last year, the NE Manion Cup was won by Julieanas after running strongly to cross the finish line. Permit came agonizingly close in second with Dance With Her completing the podium finish in third.
The competitive nature of the NE Manion Cup has been one of the major identities of the race in recent history. The event was elevated from a listed race to a Group 3 event for the 2013-14 season and features along the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes and the Rosehill Guineas on the same day.
A lot of horse trainers look at the NE Manion Cup as the best start for 3 year olds looking to feature and strongly compete in other longer races in the Sydney Autumn. The best lead up race for the event is the Group 3 Sky Line Stakes and even though not many horses have managed to win the NE Manion Cup and the Sky Line Stakes double, last year Julieanas showed great class and strength to finish strongly and win these two events.
Horses that do well in the NE Manion Cup can also consider running in the Group 1 3200M Sydney Cup or the 2600M Chairman’s Handicap. The event has remained one of the spring boards for 3yos to position themselves well to compete in other long distance races. Some of the notable horses to win the race include Bid Spotter in 2011 and Permit back in 2012.
