The Ladies Day Vase is a high profile Group 3 race exclusive to mares only. The event is held annually in October every Wednesday at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse in Victoria, South East Australia. Run over a distance 1600M, the event is a perfect sprint race for stronger and in form mares looking to set some momentum heading into other big sprint races in the Melbourne Spring Carnival. The Ladies Day Vase is today worth up to $120,000 in prize money and is run under set weights.
The 2013 edition of the Ladies Day Vase was spectacular. The event was however won by the outstanding Zonza after outclassing a number of mares. Bonaria and Two Sugars both had to settle for second and third respectively in what was one of the most thrilling Group 3 races of the Melbourne Spring. Previously known as the Snowhite Maintenance Classic, the race was elevated from a listed event to a Group 3 Showpiece back in 2013.
Although the Ladies Day Vase is not one of the richest races in Australian horse racing, the popularity of the event has done well to attract high quality sprinters from different parts of the country. Horses that contested the Group 2 Rose of Kingston Stakes can consider taking part in this race. According to many horse trainers, the best progressions for mares that shine in the Ladies Day Vase include the Group 1 WS Cox Plate and the Group 2 Inglis Mile.
The last mare to take home the Ladies Day Vase and the Inglis Mile double was the remarkable Star of Giselle back in 2012. The same success was also replicated by Lady Lynette a year earlier in 2009. The Ladies Day Vase produces champions and for horse racing fans in Victoria keen on emerging and upcoming super stars of the Australian Turf, there is no doubt this race should be an ideal pick for them in the 2014 edition of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
