The JRA Plate is a middle distance quality handicap race that is held annually in April at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse in New South Wales. The Group 3 race is worth $150,000 in prize money and is run over a distance of 2000M. The JRA Plate was elevated from a listed race to a Group 3 event for the 2013-14 season based on the quality racing it has showcased in the last few years.
In 2013, the race was won by Kelinni and even though Fibrillation also put up a good show, the horse had to settle for second ahead of Pirate Bay who came through to complete the podium places. The race takes center stage on the final day of the Sydney Autumn and features a long the Group 1 All Aged Stakes on the same day. In recent years the JRA Plate has assembled above average horses looking to finish the Sydney Autumn Carnival on a high.
The best lead up events for the JRA Plate are the Group 3 Sky line Stakes and the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes. Horses that perform well in this two races tend to put up a good show in the JRA Plate and in 2012, Western Symbol produced exemplary running to complete a remarkable JRA Plate and Neville Sellwood Stakes double.
The race is also ideal for horses looking to test their abilities over middle distance races. In its proud and decorated history, the JRA Plate has done well to maintain a consistent show of thrilling horse racing for horse racing lovers across Australia. The 2014 event is expected to be bigger and better especially now that the race is attracting a broad diversity of quality 3 year olds and above horses.
