The James HB Carr Stakes is a major 1400M Group 3 race that is held in April every year at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse in New South Wales. The race is exclusive to three year old fillies only and is run under set weight conditions. The James HB Carr Stakes is currently worth up to $150,000 in prize money and it has always been an exciting prospect for fillies looking to build up on their performances on other sprint events in the Sydney Autumn.
The last year’s James HB Carr Stakes was won by Missy Cummings who produced a great run to beat Catkins and Medusa’s Touch in second and third respectively. The quality racing that James HB Carr Stakes has produced over the last few years saw the race elevated from a listed event to a Group 3 race for the 2013-14 season.
The race is held on the last day of the Sydney Autumn and shares the same stage with a number of high profile races that include the Group 1 All Aged Stakes and the Group 1 ATC Champagne Stakes. The James HB Carr Stakes tends to assemble above average fillies and even though in some occasions an elite horse may feature, recent winners in this race have all been the average types.
The Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes is an ideal lead up event for this race. In 2011, outstanding filly Red Tracer capped an exemplary performance in the Sydney Autumn with a well deserved James HB Carr Stakes and PJ Bell Stakes double. Catkins last year also came close after finishing second in the James HB Carr Stakes on course towards victory in the PJ Bell Stakes. Other notable fillies to feature in the race include Angel of Mercy back in 2012 and Miss Cummings last year.
