The Epona Stakes is a quality and exciting Group 3 race that features during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The race is exclusive for fillies and mares and is run over a relatively longer distance of 1900M under predetermined weights. The Epona Stakes takes center stage in March every year at Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse in New South Wales. The race is currently worth a remarkable $100,000 in prize money. The 2013 edition of the Epona Stakes was nothing short of exceptional. The exciting race produced a competitive contest with Aliyana Tilde edging it to win the title.
Epingle and Dolly Dolly had to settle for second and third. The Epona Stakes was elevated from a listed race to a Group 3 Showpiece back in 2011 and on the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the event features along the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas on the same the day. The race is regarded by many horse trainers as the ideal Group 3 events for fillies and mares looking to compete in the major middle distance races in the Sydney Carnival.
Fillies and mares that perform reasonably well at the Epona Stakes can consider taking part in a number of races including the Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes, the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes or the Premier distance race for fillies in the Sydney Autumn – The ATC Australian Oaks. In addition to this, the 3200M Sydney Cup is also a perfect progression for the race.
Although in recent years the Epona Stakes has not attracted elite fillies and mares, the race has done well to assemble above average and highly gifted horses. A number of notable mares and fillies have graced the race in recent years. Notable performers include Jessicabeel back in 2010 who finished third in the race on course towards victory in the Sydney Cup. The others are Once Were Wilde in 2012, Devine Rebel in 2009 and Messenger in 2012.
