The Champagne Stakes is an eye-catching Group 3 race run over a sprint distance of 1200M under set weights. The race is worth up to $150,000 in prize money and is held every year at the iconic Moonee Valley Racecourse in Victoria’s biggest city – Melbourne. The Champagne Stakes is one of the major sprint races exclusive to three year old fillies only and the popularity of the event has grown strength by strength over the last few decades.

In 2013, the event produced a pulsating contest as talented and passionate sprinters competed for the top prize but in the end, Thump claimed the spoils with a close finish ahead of Miracles of Life and I Love It who both had to settle for second and third respectively. The race shares the same stage and the same date with the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes and the Group 1 AJ Moir Stakes. The Champagne Stakes is seen by many horse trainers as an event to test the relatively less strong fillies before they can embark on tackling other relatively highly competitive sprint races of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Although over the last few years the event has largely showcased above average fillies, this has not taken away the quality and amazing champions that have been associated with the Champagne Stakes. For example, Faint Perfume ran fifth in the 2009 edition of the Champagne Stakes before taking home the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes. The filly would then go on and win the Group 1 Crown Oaks in what was a remarkable performance.

In 2010, the outstanding Solar Charged ran a distant 9th in the Champagne Stakes but did exemplary well to win the Thoroughbred Club Stakes. In 2009 though, Avenue took home a remarkable Champagne Stakes and Thoroughbred Club Stakes double. The main reason why the Champagne Stakes has become a popular race in Australia is based on the high level of talent on show every year. In 2014, the race will be a major favorite especially among horse racing enthusiasts looking for emerging sprinters of the turf.
