The Bletchingly Stakes is a breathtaking high energy sprint race that comes around at the Caulfield Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The event is run over a sprint distance of 1200M and is regarded as one of the most pulsating Group 3 races at the Melbourne Spring. The Bletchingly Stakes is today worth up to $150,000 in prize money and over the last few decades, the race has showcased high quality horse racing and some of the most emerging sprinting talents from different parts of the country. The 2013 edition of the Bletchingly Stakes was graciously won by Second Effort after beating Academy Jack to second in what was a highly competitive sprint. Luanay had to settle for third despite a respectable run.
The Bletchingly Stakes is actually one of the first races in the Melbourne Spring and is regarded as the ideal start to the Carnival. The event often attracts new and emerging horses looking to test their capabilities before tacking other bigger races. The perfect build up for this event is the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes which is held a few weeks earlier. The last horse to win these two races in the same year was Rubitano in 2002 and since then this remarkable success has never been replicated.
Second Effort came close though last year after winning the Bletchingly Stakes on course towards a respectable third place finish in the Sir John Monash Stakes. Horses that perform well in the race can consider taking on the Group 1 Memsie Stakes or the Group 2 JJ Liston Stakes. In 2010, the outstanding Shootout did exemplary well to take home the Bletchingly Stakes and the JJ Liston Stakes double. The Bletchingly Stakes is seen by many horse trainers as a great test for horses that are keen on winning other weight for age races and in fact, horses that perform well in this race always make it big in other weight for age races.
Mid Summer Music in 2011 for example won the Bletchingly Stakes and went on to take home the Group 3 Cockram Stakes. In 2007, Apache Cat completed a Liston Stakes and a Bletchingly Stakes double and moved on to finish second in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes. Such is the great talent on show at the race and even in 2014, the event will be a major highlight for horse racing enthusiasts.
