The Aurie’s Star Handicap is a popular sprint race held annually at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne Victoria, South East Australia. The event is run over a sprint distance of 1200M and in recent years it has provided a great stage for up and coming local sprinters to showcase their talents. The Aurie’s Star Handicap is today worth up to $151,000 in prize money and in last year’s edition of the race Broken produced a strong and passionate sprint to take home the title ahead of Temple of Boom and Cavallo Nero who both had to settle for second and third respectively.
The event was elevated from a listed race to a Group 3 showpiece for the 2010-11 season and since then, the race has maintained a high profile status as far as enthralling and quality horse racing is concerned. The Aurie’s Star Handicap is actually a spring board for emerging sprinters looking to take on and compete for honors in other big sprint races in the Melbourne Spring.
Although quite often the event is graced by above average and more than handy sprinters, the Aurie’s Star Handicap has never failed to produce outstanding champions most of who make it big in other races. In 2009, the outstanding Mic Mac took home the Aurie’s Star Handicap title on course towards a hard fought victory in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes.
In the same year, All American finished second in this race and later went on to win the Group 1 Emirates Stakes. The horse also did well to finish second in the Waterford Mile in what was a breathtaking run of form by the talented sprinter. Other notable winners to claim the Aurie’s Star Handicap title include Grand Duels in 2008, Temple of Boom in 2011 and Elusive Touch back in 2010.
