The Angst Stakes is a mares-only Group 3 race that takes center stage at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse in New South Wales. The event is held annually in October and is run over a sprint distance of 1500M. The Angst Stakes is today worth up to $100,000 in prize money and in recent years, the event has grown to become one of the major races in the Australian horse racing calendar. The 2013 edition of the race was won by Sharnee Rose with Queenstown and Porcellanus coming through in second and third respectively.
The Angst Stakes has showcased high quality racing for the better part of its history. The event was upgraded from a listed event to a Group 3 Race last year and will feature on the same day as the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes in the latter stages of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. Typically, the race tends to assemble a broad diversity of mares with different abilities.
In recent years though, the Angst Stakes has largely been a stage for above average horses to test their abilities in sprint races before moving on to other big sprint events. Nonetheless, the competitive nature and the quality of racing the Angst Stakes showcases makes it a must see for any horse racing enthusiast. The most ideal build up for the race is the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes and Nocturnelle was the last mare to win the Angst Stakes and the Tibbie stakes double in 2012.
The race has done well in recent years to produce great mares and most notably, Sharnee Rose came through to win the Angst Stakes after scoring a breathtaking win in the Group 3 Research Stakes. In this year’s Sydney Spring Carnival, the race is expected to attract quality horses as well as a good share of crowds from Sydney and its environs.
