The AAMI Victoria Derby is run over a long distance of 2500M and is one of the toughest races in the Melbourne Spring. The race is today worth $1,500,000 in prize money and it first debuted in 1923. The sheer quality and breathtaking talent the AAMI Victoria Derby has showcased in nearly a century since its debut is exceptional.

The proud winner of the 2013 edition of the race was Polanski with Complacent and Thunder Fantasy both settling for second and third respectively. The event takes center stage along the Group 1 McKinnon Stakes, the Myer Classic and the Coolmore Stud Stakes which is definitely a great line up for horse racing enthusiasts across the country. The race features on Derby day attracting crowds in excess of 100,000. Such is the popularity of the AAMI Victoria Derby and the most ideal build up race for this event is the Group 2 AAMI Vase.

In 2006, Efficient became the last horse to take home the AAMI Victoria Derby and the AAMI Vase double in what was a great spring season for the three year old. Other great horses to achieve this success include Helenus back in 2002 and Plastered back in 2004. Horses that emerge victorious in the AAMI Victoria Derby often go on to become super stars of the turf.

Efficient in 2006 recorded a remarkable treble victory after walking away with the AAMI Victoria Derby, the AAMI Vase and the big money Melbourne Cup. In 2010, Lion Tamer won the AAMI Victoria Derby and retuned the following spring to claim the Group 1 Underwood Stakes. The Quality and the talent showcased in the AAMI Victoria Derby is definitely a must see and in the 2014 Melbourne Spring Carnival, the event is set to remain a major highlight for horse racing fans.
