Almandin Has Eyes On The Flemington In Australian Cup
Damien Oliver has his eyes on his 109th win for Group 1 in this Saturday’s Australian Cup alongside his horse, Almandin. So far, Almandin has won four races in Australia. However, all of them are at distances of 2400m or further. The Australian Cup Flemington is a 2000m race. This is a matter of concern as the2016 Melbourne Cup winnerfailed at his only attempt over the Flemington 2000m at his second Australian start.
However, he did come up as a closesecond over 2040m at Moonee Valley first up last spring. Last month, he also resumed with a close second to Homesmanat Caulfield. Flemington is set to be a course that Almandin will find it easier to excel in.
It is worth noting that Almandin is indeed getting a bit older. Therefore, the team may be putting some blinkers on the horse. Being at Flemington is going to be great for Almandin as he will have a terrific chance of winning.
Damien, at the age of 45 acknowledges that he is in the twilight of his career. However, a big race like Flemington is a great opportunity that he is appreciative of. He looks forward to taking on the younger racers and believes he still has it in him to win the race.
