2017 Victoria Derby Results: Favourite Ace High Wins
The David Payne trained speedster Ace High ($6) completely justified the punters’ trust in him, as it cruised to a dominant victory in the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m). Despite not making the best of the start and struggling in the middle spot until the final 600m, Ace High regained its pace towards the end under the guidance of jockey Tye Angland to comfortably cross the winning post ahead of his rivals.
After the race, Angland sounded very pleased with the performance of the 3YO winner. “It’s obviously a huge thrill,” said Angland. “But I was thinking, man I’m in trouble where I am around the 1000m – 800m; just the pace of the race, in a bunched field when they steadied up. I had to count and wait and let him roll into it, just try and hold him for as long as I could.”
Trainer Payne labeled the win a ‘dream come true’. “It’s always been my dream to win one here…let’s hope it continues,” he said. “It’s taken a while, but it’s worked out; we’ve planned this about six months and it just fell into place, everything. We looked at his pedigree and we were lucky we got him at the Magic Millions…I think we got him at a very good price.”
The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young trained Sully ($8.50) finished second in the race and jockey Hugh Bowman didn’t seem very disappointed with the outcome. “He just lacks a bit of race sense, (but) a good brave run, very happy,” said Bowman.
The James Cummings trained Astoria ($9.50) finished third in the race, while the Robbie Laing trained Pissaro finished ($26) finished fourth.
